Centerboard

A wood & lead centerboard of maximum thickness, conforming to Thistle class rules.  The lead ballast is situated to reduce pitching moment as much as possible under the rules.

The amount of lead ballast required make these very time consuming to construct, hence the somewhat higher price.   The end result is a good stiff board of a fast shape.

Rudder

Fiberglass over wood construction, with hardwood (mahogany) cheeks.

The one below features a two-tone paintjob (to match the red & white centerboard done earlier for the same customer). Note that the hardware shown, the fiberglass tiller hood, the clear coat on the cheeks, and the two tone paint are all added cost options.

Feedback on the first centerboard:

...  Having now had a chance to see the finished product, I can only say that I am very impressed.  I haven't had a chance to sail with the new foil as the water has been blown out exposing all reefs in the area.  I will probably sail with the foil, for the first time, in February at mid-winters in Florida.

Everyone who has seen the foil is extremely impressed.  I think you have a very marketable product.  I appreciate all of your efforts.  I plan on having you build the rudder.  I am currently trying to get the plans ready for your review.

And later:

Phil:

Congratulations, we have a winner! We dropped the Red Board in a Thistle at Mid-winters in St. Petersburg. With the red board on we took a 5th and 16th of 62. The board is stiff and competitive. The national caliber sailors were very interested in the board. We got several nibbles. I displayed the board when it wasn't in the boat. Hopefully you will be getting some calls and orders.

Now for a rudder...

Now he's got his rudder he wrote:

Phil:

The rudder looks great. I put it on the boat and it slipped right in the gudgeons just perfect.... a first class project. I am very pleased.  Thanks again for everything. I really appreciate the work you have done for me.

Phil -

They say "better late than never" -- I hope that saying applies in this case.

I wanted to say thank you for doing such a great job on the Thistle rudder for me last year. I am very pleased and have gotten more than a few inquiries from others that have seen your work. It really does look 'FAST"! Now, if only I could get my driving to stop sucking so bad ... :-)
