Centerboards:

At this time I have centerboard trunk dimensions for Waterat, Rondar, Lindsay, Kyrwood, Parker and Van Munster.  CBs can be made with the wetted area of your choice, rounded or squared-off tips, and fixed or variable pin extensions.

Current size designations for centerboards are: 5o501CB - 480 sq inches; 5o502CB - 510 sq inches; 5o503CB - 430 sq inches; 5o504CB - 450 sq inches.  Not all  are shown here (there's just getting to be far too much on this page!)

 August 2006   Phil-

Just writing to pass on compliments and thanks for the centerboard.  A while back you made a 430 for Jeff Boyd, and it finally got used for the pre-NAs and NAs this month in San Francisco .  My boat typically uses the 480 that you made for me a last year, and it has been rock solid so far.  For the breezy conditions in SF bay it looked like all the top boats were sailing a 430.  Luckily, Jeff had brought this foil out with him, so we swapped it in.  It was the ticket for sure.  No worries at all in the 20-30 knot wind range we saw.  We felt that this board was definitely one of the reasons why we had a great top gear upwind, and on the reaches it was nice to have the smaller foil fully down – no sweepback needed really.  All in all, a 430 seems to be the way to go, even with heavy teams, in 15 knots and above.  (I understand why some teams can use a 380 with no problem!)

BTW, the rudder I got from you last year has been bulletproof as well.  A number of gudgeon failures occurred in these regattas, as well as at least 1 rudder failure, so I was really watching that foil (especially since I don’t have a spare!).  Not one complaint out of it, or issue of any kind.  You may recall that I have the very high aspect rudder, and there was some talk/concern about how easy it could be to stall such foils, and the risk of a spin out on a windy reach.  This did not happen once in 7 days of hard sailing in wavy seas and high winds.  I was definitely concerned that, with such a long foil, the loading on the rudder could be extremely high.  It has held up fine (bombproof hardware mounting on the transom is key as well!) so I’ll probably get another one from you as a spare.

Cheers, Steve

Want some carbon jewelry for your 5-oh?   Instead of a skanky aluminum tube for your mastram, upgrade to one of our foil-sectioned carbon units.  Not only does it present a much lower profile to the wind, but it looks pretty damn cool too!

Design: 5o501CB
Hi-Aspect Centerboard - 480 sq in

The class is evolving towards 480 sq inches in wetted area being the size of choice, especially for breezier locations.

Uses a multi-layer layup of both uni and woven carbon fiber over a core of Sitka Spruce.   Very stiff, and weighs in at about 4.2kg.

Note: requires centerboard pin location to be moved forward in the trunk.  This foil will not fit all boats.

Shown at right for a Lindsay (lousy camera angle, sorry), also available to suit other hulls.

Design: 5o502CB
Hi-Aspect Centerboard - 510 sq in

A bit more wetted area for boats that generally sail in lighter wind.

As with the 480 board, uses a multi-layer layup of both uni and woven carbon fiber over a core of Sitka Spruce.

Note: requires centerboard pin location to be moved forward in the trunk.  This foil will not fit all boats - you must measure.

Shown at right, in graphite finish, to fit a Van Munster (note the sharper angle on the head).   Customer chose to go with an elliptical tip on this one.

Design: 5o503CB
Hi-Aspect Centerboard - 430 sq in

Centerboard sizes continue to trend downwards in the 5o5 class, especially in breezy venues..

As with the 480 board, uses a multi-layer layup of both uni and woven carbon fiber over a core of Sitka Spruce.

This design doesn't go for the ultimate in length, preferring to keep a bit of area at the waterline to ensure sufficient strength (same root chord length and thickness as the 480).

Note: requires centerboard pin location to be moved forward in the trunk.  This foil will not fit all boats - you must measure.

Shown at right (unfortunately a bit of an angled shot) to fit a Waterat.

Rudders:

Design: 5o501R
Hi-Aspect Rudder

This is the "standard" high aspect rudder.  The length and short chord combine to require a substantial carbon fiber layup over its spruce core.

The one at far right is set up with the head length / tiller angle for a newer Rondar.

Design: 5o502R
Standard Rudder

Standard fixed rudder design - rectangular planform with a bit of sweepback.  Carbon fiber layup over Sitka Spruce, with red cedar spliced into the tip to reduce weight.

Tiller socket can be made to any diameter you specify.

The rudder shown at right is finished with white paint (with a clear coat) over white pigmented epoxy.

Also available for kickup headstocks - see the gallery at the bottom of this page.

Design: 5o503R
Very High Aspect Rudder

Developed for a couple of high profile 5o5 sailors in the US, it was sailed to 9th at the 2003 Worlds and was on the winning boat in several east coast regattas.

A blend of sitka spruce and red cedar with a carbon fiber layup, the rudder is very light despite the high strength requirements.

This rudder is becoming quite a popular item. Based on feedback, recent copies have been made with a slightly increased chord length.

The original is shown at left, and the 2nd revision is on the right.

Also available as a lifting rudder with a custom carbon fiber cassette - see the gallery at the bottom of this page.

A molded version (5o503RM) is available at lower cost - group purchases only please (I don't normally stock the gelcoat, with its limited shelf life).  See the image gallery below for a look at this one.

5o501R for kickup headstock.
Variable length pin extension:  a flexible length of G10 that not only allows your centerboard to be adjusted fore/aft for balance, but will also increase gybing angle slightly.

Not patented, but remember - you saw it here first!

480 sq inch CB for a Kyrwood, with variable length pin extension and elliptical tip.   Finish in white Awlgrip.
5o503R lifting-style with custom carbon fiber cassette.

Note that you lose the notch at the transom, which brings a slightly higher risk of ventilation.

"Phil, got to try your new rudder out today. It works well and the cassette is awesome for beach launching. The other boats in the fleet were impressed. One of the comments was "that is the best rudder in the fleet".  Thanks again for a good product.

John"

A batch of molded rudders (5o503RM) - this was my first serious molding attempt, resulting in a few cosmetic issues to deal with (but good strength and shape).  Note the different head heights and tiller angles for various flavours of 5o5.

"Phil,

Bob P and I have the new rudders mounted in Bob's boat and my two. And we raced our TESOD last night in one of my boats and Bob's boat. So we now have one evening's sailing worth of experience with them. They felt fine. "Feels like a rudder." It was not anything close to extreme conditions where we would test the limits of the rudders... but it was raked, trapezing and planing. They work fine.

Thanks,

Ali"

Here's a 450 sq inch board (5o505CB) for a Van Munster (using the original Van Munster head shape from a tracing of the customer's previous board)

Additional 5o5 Feedback

Customer feedback on 5o503R:

Phil - we used the new rudder last weekend in some decent breeze and
according to Ali, "it felt like a rudder".  So, it seems like everything is
working well.  Anyway, nice job.

Jesse

Feedback on 5o502CB :

Received the board today,  everything looks good.  Geoff and I set the board in the trunk today and it fits (big relief)  .
thanks
dave

And

Have received board and the fit is not only good, but
excellent.  Thanks.

Geoff

And later

Hey Phil.

Sorry It's taken me so long to give you feedback on the new centerboard,  So far I am very pleased with the performance of the new boat and board. My past performance in my old boat which is a heavy, soft 18 year old Parker with a bent epsilon mast kept me in a fairly consistent last place in most races.  At Windsor I was always in the pack ending up 7th in a 11 boat fleet.   Even managed to finish 2nd in one race. I was as fast as anyone out there, all I need to do now is relearn how to race....
Anyway I am happy with the board and service and will recommend you to
others.

Thanks Again
Dave

More

Hi Phil, you did a nice job on our centerboard and rudder....The rudder worked great. It tripped a few times in the heavy wind, but was really smooth otherwise.

Thanks

Rich
